A Brompton Oratory Wedding and Dorchester Hotel Reception: Maximilian & Shalene

Maximilian and Shalene married at Brompton Oratory in the summer of 2026, in a full Catholic ceremony, before a reception at The Dorchester on Park Lane. Two of the grandest rooms in London, a mile and a half apart, in a single afternoon.

Brompton Oratory

The London Oratory sits on Brompton Road beside the V&A, Italianate Baroque and one of the largest Catholic churches in the city. The nave is enormous. Marble, statuary, a dome that pulls your eye up the moment you walk in. It is one of the few churches in London where the architecture genuinely competes with the couple, and the job is to let it do that without losing them in it.

It is also properly dark. The windows sit high and the interior is deep, so even at midday in June the light drops off fast away from the aisle. I work with fast primes and no flash during the mass, which keeps the atmosphere intact and keeps me out of the ceremony. A full nuptial mass runs about an hour, so knowing the order of service well enough to be in position ahead of each moment matters more here than almost anywhere.

The Dorchester Hotel

Ten minutes up through Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner, and the day changes character completely.

The Dorchester opened on Park Lane in 1931 and the Ballroom has kept its Art Deco character since. Gold, mirrored, chandeliered, lit very warm. It is a beautiful room and a stubborn one: the light is gorgeous to the eye and difficult on a sensor. Most of the work is keeping skin tones honest under those chandeliers while the gold of the room still reads as gold.

Maximilian and Shalene had a live band and a DJ, which is the right answer if the budget allows it. The band gives you the peak of the evening, the DJ makes sure the floor never goes cold between sets.

Enjoy!
